Indian cricket was not known for hitting big sixes before Kapil Dev came on board. Before him, Salim Durrani was known for hitting sixes on demand during the Ranji Trophy matches. Apart from him ML Jaisimha and CK Nayudu were known for hitting some big sixes in their time.
We have for you five players who have hit some big sixes for India in Tests or ODIs.
1. KAPIL DEV – 4 SIXES OFF EDDIE HEMMINGS 1990 LORD’S TEST
Graham Gooch had pummeled India into submission scorign 333 in England’s first innings, with England making 653/4 dec. India were staring at follow-on when last man Narendra Hirwani walked in to join Kapil Dev at the crease. India were 20 runs short of the follow-on mark.
Kapil decided to save face and hit spinner Eddie Hemmings for 4 sixes in four balls. He saved the follow on, as Hirwani was dismissed first ball in the next over. Kapil is the only batsman to hit 4 sixes in 4 balls in Test cricket.
2. YUVRAJ SINGH – 6 SIXES OFF STUART BROAD, WORLD T20 2007, DURBAN
This is the most well known incident of an Indian hitting sixes. Yuvraj was incensed by Andrew Flintoff’s constant sledging and took it all out on Stuart Broad, hitting him for six sixes in one over. Yuvraj scored his fifty in just 12 balls, the fastest in international cricket and T20I cricket.
3. ZAHEER KHAN – 4 SIXES IN 4 BALLS AGAINST HENRY OLONGA, 2001
Zaheer Khan showed a lot of potential with bat during his career. His Test best of 75 was the highest score by an no.11 in Tests for along time. He also showed immense hitting ability in ODIs during the initial phases of his career.
The best of the lot came against Zimbabwe in 2001. He smashed Henry Olonga for 4 sixes in 4 balls during an ODI.
4. MS DHONI – 10 SIXES VS SRI LANKA, JAIPUR, 2005
MS Dhoni made his name in international cricket as a big hitting assasinin this match. He came in at no.3 three with India chasing almost 300 runs and smashed 183* which inlcuded 10 huge sixes.
he was the first batsman from India to hit 10 sixes in an ODI and his score of 183 is still the highest score by a wicketkeeper in ODIs.
5. ROHIT SHARMA – 16 SIXES IN 209 VS AUSTRALIA, BANGALORE, 2013
Rohit Sharma got a new lease of life when MS Dhoni asked him to open during the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 in England. He repaid the fate during the ODI series against Australia at home. He had already scored a century in the series.
At Bengaluru, he became the 3rd Indian to hit a double hundred in ODIs, as he hit 209 with a world record 16 sixes. Later the record was equalled by AB de Villiers during his 44 ball 149, in which De Villiers made the fastest century in ODI cricket, off just 31 balls, against West Indies in 2015.
